About Asthma

Treatment

Treatment for asthma depends on how severe the symptoms are and how often they strike. The doctor may prescribe two types of medicines:

  • Quick-relief – Anyone with asthma should have a quick-relief medicine or “rescue” medicine available at all times. This treats the noisy part of the disease - the coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath that can happen during an asthma attack. These drugs help open the airways.
  • Long-term control – This type of medicine is needed by some people to treat the quiet part of asthma – the inflammation of the airways. It’s taken daily to prevent symptoms.

Allergy shots may be an option if medicines don’t help or if you can’t avoid the things that trigger your asthma.
