William Dolen Installed as ACAAI President;
Daniel Ein Becomes President-Elect

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- William K. Dolen, M.D., Augusta, Ga., was installed as president the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) at the ACAAI Annual Meeting in Anaheim on Nov. 8, 2005.

Other officers elected were:  Drs. Daniel Ein, M.D., Washington, D.C., president-elect; Jay M. Portnoy, Kansas City, Mo., vice president; and Richard G. Gower, Spokane, Wash., treasurer.  Elected as Regents for three-year terms were Drs. James R. Claflin, Oklahoma City, Ok; Michael B. Foggs, Chicago; and Dr. Kathleen Ruffing May, Cumberland, Md.

Dr. Dolen is professor of pediatrics and medicine in the allergy and immunology section at the Medical College of Georgia.

A Fellow since 1988, he became vice president of ACAAI in 2003 and is serving his second term on the ACAAI Board of Regents (1993-96 and 2003-present) and Executive Committee. During this past year, he served on the Foundation Board and chaired the Annual Meeting Program Committee, and served on numerous committees including Finance, Bylaws, Publications, Workshop, Continuing Medical Education, CD-ROM Oversight, A/I Training Program Directors’ Planning, Technology and Computers.

Dr. Dolen is past president of the Southeastern Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society and the Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society of Georgia. He is an ad hoc reviewer for the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology; and he was a member of Allergy-Immunology MKSAP III. He has authored more than 90 abstracts, publications and audiovisual programs. He received the ACAAI 2001 Distinguished Fellow Award.

Dr. Ein is clinical professor of medicine, and chief, Division of Allergy at George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
He previously served on the ACAAI Board of Regents, 2000-2003 and as Executive Committee member. He chairs the Pharmaceutical Symposium Committee and the Acorn Project Ad Hoc Committee;  is vice chair of the Abstract Review Committee; and also chaired the ACAAI/AAAAI Task Force on Smallpox. He is a member of the committees on Finance, Annual Program, Ethics and Site Selection and Managed Care.

Dr. Ein is past president of the Joint Council of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 1999, and was founder and president of the Capitol Physicians Network. He is also past president of the Medical Society of D.C., the Jacobi Soci
ety of Washington and the Greater Washington Allergy Society.
Dr. Portnoy is professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, and chief, Section of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He served on the ACAAI Board of Regents, 1994-97, and was awarded the 2001 Distinguished Fellow Award and the 1999 Distinguished Service Award. He currently chairs the Immunotherapy & Diagnostics Committee, the Allied Health Professionals Committee, the Meet the Professor Breakfast Committee and he co-chairs the Joint Taskforce on Practice Parameters. He is on the Editorial Board and is Assistant Editor of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and is a member of committees on Allergy/Immunology TrainingProgram Directors’ Planning, Annual Program, Pediatrics and Practice Guidelines.

Dr. Portnoy is past president of the Missouri State Allergy Society, 1993-95, and past president of the Kansas City Allergy Society, 1988. His asthma disease management program recently won the Making a Difference award from the Asthma & Allergy Network/Mothers of Asthmatics and the Leadership award from the Environmental Protection Agency for a program involving indoor air quality.

Dr. Gower is clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle, and a private practitioner at the Rockwood Clinic, Spokane, Wash.

A Fellow since 1986, he is currently ACAAI treasurer and serving his third term on the  Board of Regents as Speaker of the House of Delegates, 1997-99, and Regent, 1999-2002. He chairs the Finance Committee and the Public Relations Network. He is a member of the Executive Committee, HEDIS Task Force, Professional Education Council, and on the committees for Publications, Investment Oversight and Membership Recruitment and Professional A-I Education.

Dr. Gower previously chaired the ACAAI Managed Care Committee and Regional Meetings Task Force. He was president of Inland Empire Allergy Society, 1993-99; president of Washington State Society of Internal Medicine, 1986-87; president of Western Society of Allergy and Immunology, 1997-98, and president of the Intermountain West Allergy Association, 2000-01.

Dr. Claflin is assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Okla. He previously served on the ACAAI Board of Regents as Speaker of the House of Delegates, 2002-03. Dr. Claflin is chair of the Membership Recruitment Committee; vice chair of the International and Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development Committees; and liaison/consultant for the Auxiliary of ACAAI. He is also a member of the Site Selection and Meet the Professor Breakfasts Committees. Previous ACAAI activities have included Adverse Reactions to Foods (vice chair), Allergic Rhinitis and By-Laws committees.

Dr. Foggs is chief of Allergy & Immunology at Advocate Health Centers of Advocate Health Care in Chicago, Illinois. He is vice chair of the ACAAI Managed Care and Health Insurance Committee and an active member of the Public Relations Network. Dr. Foggs is a member of the NHLBI, NAEPP Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma Expert Panel 3 and is chairman of the Executive Committee of the Allergy and Immunology Section of the National Medical Association. He also is Chief Scientific Officer of Environmental Technology Solutions, Inc., an industrial hygiene company.

Dr. May is a private practitioner at Allegany Allergy & Asthma in Cumberland, Md. She previous served on the ACAAI Board of Regents as fellow-in-training representative, 1993-95. She is an Ad Hoc Reviewer for Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, and a member of the FIT Bowl Committee, 1993-present. Previously, Dr. May served on the Annals Editorial Board, chaired the Young Physicians Committee, participated in the Resident Mentor Program, and was a member of the Program Committee.

The ACAAI is a professional medical organization, headquartered in Arlington Heights, Ill., comprising nearly 5,000 qualified allergists-immunologists and related health care professionals. The College is dedicated to the clinical practice of allergy, asthma and immunology through education and research to promote the highest quality of patient care.
