Why is this change taking place?

The U.S. government agreed in 1987 to an international treaty called the Montreal Protocol to stop the use of chemicals that destroy the ozone layer, including CFCs.  Patients in several places that signed the Montreal Protocol, including Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan, already use HFA inhalers.

In the United States, albuterol inhalers with HFAs have been prescribed for several years and there has been no difference in their effectiveness compared to CFC-albuterol inhalers.
