Ask the Allergist | Ask Dr Sami - Eye Allergies and Contact Lens Use

Q: I recently went from wearing eyeglasses to contact lenses, and suffer from seasonal allergies that affect my eyes. How will wearing contact lenses impact my eye allergies?
A: Contact lens wear in those with eye allergies can be tricky. Allergens such as ragweed pollen are covered with multiple points which make them "stick" to surfaces better. Hygiene, of course, must be ideal when using contact lenses, as better hygiene allows fewer protiens to be deposited. Artificial tears may be used to rinse the eyes. Antihistamine eyedrops can be helpful, but must be used prior to placing the contact lenses to avoid clouding the lenses. And disposable lenses are more effective at reducing exposure than the extended-wear kind. But the best answer on high pollen days might be to switch temporarily back to eyeglasses!
