Fellows-in-Training shine in Phoenix

by John Seyerle, MD, Senior FIT Representative to the ACAAI Board of Regents

Dr. Seyerle

Dr. Saff

Phoenix was a great host for the 2010 ACAAI Annual Meeting, welcoming us with sunshine and warmth. Like many of you, I enjoyed seeing old friends and making new friendships I hope will last throughout my career. The meeting was popular with FITs, with 253 attending the conference (208 of them on travel grants).  Thanks to all who donated time and money to make possible the attendance of so many fellows-in-training.

The 19th Annual ACAAI FIT Bowl competition was well attended, entertaining, and educational, for both participants and spectators alike. Monica Johnson, DO, and Mark Stahl, DO, of Wilford Hall Medical Center won first prize in the hotly contested competition. There was standing room only as the crowd cheered on their favorites and tested their knowledge as the 32 teams from around the country answered questions ranging from basic science to fun trivia.

The conference wrapped up with the fellow-in training business meeting on Monday night.  We heard from outgoing ACAAI President Sami Bahna, MD, DrPH, FACAAI, who addressed the audience on the future of the College. We also heard from representatives of the Alliance, Joint Council, and ACGME. The evening ended with the annual selection of the new junior FIT Representative to the Board of Regents. This year’s election pitted three excellent candidates from around the country, with Rebecca Saff, MD, from Massachusetts General Hospital, winning the job.

I would like to express my sincerest thanks to the outgoing regional representatives graduating from their two-year positions: Nathanael Brady, DO, Madhu Narra, MD, MS, Cyrus Nozad, MD, John Pulcini, MD, and Jeremy Katcher, MD.  Thank you so much for your help this last year!

Please welcome our new regional representatives: Irene Fung, MD, Nina Poliak, MD, MPH, Autumn Chandler Guyer, MD, Arnaldo Perez, MD, Thomas Mertz, DO, PharmD, Cindy Salm Bauer, MD and Teresa Pun, MD.  I’m sure they will do a great job.

I would like to personally thank Christopher Martin, MD for his guidance and support over the past year. He had a very successful year as Senor FIT rep, including overhauling the FIT section of the new ACAAI website. We wish him well in his future endeavors. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts as he deploys to Afghanistan this winter for the U.S. Army. We appreciate the leadership he has provided the College, and more importantly, the sacrifices he and his family are making for our country.

I know that clinical and research duties and studying for the Boards will likely take up much of your time. Please take a moment to check out the fellow-in-training section of the new ACAAI website. It will continue to be updated, but it will still contain all the old content (FIT review corner, Board Exam links, reading lists) to help you in your day-to-day practice.

For those of you still in fellowship and those of you who just finished, I would like to end with a challenge. Stay involved. Your continued membership in the College not only allows you access to all the resources here, but also ensures that future FITs will have the opportunity to attend quality meetings like the one we just had. In addition to membership, I highly recommend joining one of the many committees of the College. The time commitment is not overwhelming, and it is a great way to participate in something you are passionate about and meet people in our field. Contact your regional representative or e-mail to join a committee, or with any other questions or concerns. We look forward to hearing from you!
