The best way to prevent anaphylaxis is to avoid the things that can trigger your allergies. Some basic allergen avoidance tips include:

Foods

  • Read ingredient labels carefully, even on products that you don’t suspect because they may contain “hidden” triggers or may be manufactured in a plant that also produces the allergy trigger.
  • When dining out, ask restaurant wait staff what products are used in food preparation.

Insect stings

  • To reduce your likelihood of being stung, avoid walking barefoot in grass and wearing strong perfumes or brightly colored clothing. Long pants and sleeves also can give you added protection.
  • When eating outdoors, keep food and beverage containers closed or covered until it’s time to eat.

Medications

  • Avoid medications to which you’ve had an allergic reaction and get a medical bracelet or necklace identifying your allergy risk.
  • Make sure all of your doctors know about your allergy so that they can prescribe safe alternatives, as well as determine any other medications you should avoid.

Latex

  • Be especially cautious in health care settings, and request that all dental, medical and surgical procedures be done using non-latex and powder-free gloves.
