Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics
Founded in 1985, Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) is the nationwide community-based nonprofit health organization dedicated to eliminating suffering and death due to allergies and asthma through education, advocacy, community outreach and research.
At the local level, AANMA has a network of outreach service coordinators (OSCs) – volunteer parents, grandparents and friends who want to educate their local communities about asthma and allergies and raise awareness of these chronic conditions. Some distribute educational materials to schools, libraries and hospitals a few hours a week. Others devote more time, speaking to community groups about the basics of asthma, participating in local and statewide coalitions to improve asthma and allergy education, working with government officials to create laws supporting the rights of people with asthma and allergies, or organizing a community Asthma Awareness Day. Many of the OSCs have a played a role in local asthma screening programs across the country.
If there is an OSC in your community, contact AANMA at 800/878-4403 x108 to determine the possibility of co-sponsoring or assisting with your screening program. A list of the cities where OSCs are located is listed below. AANMA has notified all of its OSCs about the screening program, which also is publicized on its Web site and in its membership newsletter and magazine.
In addition to helping you plan and conduct a screening, OSCs also can provide your program participants with additional resources on managing asthma and allergies and membership in the national organization. If space at your screening allows, a separate table or booth can display AANMA patient education literature and membership information.
